PRINCIPLED DESIGN: A Discussion with Women in Practice
Saturday December 6, 2014, 3:00-4:30 pm @ Miami Center for Architecture & Design
100 NE 1st Ave, Miami, FL, in the Downtown Arts District
There is a great diversity in range of how architecture is practiced. What principles and values, such as aesthetic or social ones, underpin these different practices? In the field of urban planning, theorists including Henry Mayhew, Lewis Mumford, Herbert Gans, and Jane Jacobs, have integrated moral principles into urban planning, such as the aim to foster inclusive and equitable societies. This panel assembles women who practice architecture to discuss what values they hold dear, and how these principles, if at all, frame their approach to design, implementation and practice.
Emerging from discussions about the inclusion of women in design professions, this panel builds upon related dialogues. In March 2013, Women in Design launched a Petition to the Pritzker Architecture Prize to recognize Denise Scott Brown for her role in the 1991 Prize. The Missing 32% Project is an initiative that investigates why there is a leaky pipeline for women in architecture professions. In 2014, Julia Morgan became the first woman to receive the AIA Gold Medal posthumously, honoring her prolific practice that spanned several decades during the first half of the 20th Century. This panel was conceived by Caroline James and Jaya Kader, and advised by Denise Scott Brown.
